The Public Health elective will be offered to senior M.D./MPH medical students if approved by the course director for time spent on a 2- or 4-week public health externship. M.D. students who have completed public health coursework will also be considered. The consideration of elective credit includes the content and quality of the program/ project and its relevance to the dual degree curriculum. In addition, the dates of the program must mesh with the schedule of the UMMSM M.D./MPH medical school curriculum and academic calendar. Each application will be considered on an individual basis with consideration of the student’s overall performance and standing in the UMMSM M.D./MPH program.
Students enrolled in the M.D./MPH program or M.D. students who have completed public health coursework. Application to and approval by Dr. Caban 90 days in advance.
Prior to consideration of elective credit, the student will be required to:
- Email course director the following at least 90 days prior to the start date of the elective.
- For established national electives or if a student is creating an independent program for elective credit, students must submit the Public Health Independent Study for Elective Credit Application Form to acaban@med.miami.edu. (See below)

- A self-directed/designed elective indicates an educational instruction and rotation in public health that was created by the medical student in consultation with a public health practitioner. An established program includes all national, state or local public health elective coursework that has formal learning objectives, instruction and established preceptors.
