MDR 954: Pediatric Anesthesiology

Course Description

This elective introduces medical students to the subspecialty of pediatric anesthesiology through direct participation in the perioperative care of neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing a wide range of surgical and diagnostic procedures. During this two-week rotation, students will gain exposure to ambulatory and inpatient pediatric anesthesia, regional anesthesia techniques, and congenital cardiac anesthesia. Clinical experiences may include the operating room, NICU and PICU bedside procedures, pediatric sedation and imaging suites, and the Bascom Palmer ambulatory surgery center. Didactic sessions will review fundamental concepts in pediatric physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, and perioperative management, while providing instruction in procedural skills relevant to pediatric anesthetic care.
